The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) will conduct its annual Brake Safety Week from August 25-31, 2024. This event focuses on both education and enforcement of brake inspection and maintenance procedures for commercial vehicles. Last year, nearly 13% of inspected vehicles were placed out of service for brake-related issues, many of which are preventable with proper maintenance. Inspectors will focus on various brake components, with a special emphasis on contaminated, worn, or missing linings or pads.
Key Areas of Inspection
- Missing, nonfunctioning, loose or cracked parts
- S-cam flip-over
- Air leaks around brake components and lines
- Slack adjusters not at the same length
- Mismatched air chamber sizes across axles
- Air pressure in the target range of 90-100 psi
- Holes caused by rust and through rubbing and friction
- Broken springs in the spring brake housing section of the parking brake
- Proper pushrod travel
- Warning device functionality
- Proper operation of the tractor protection system, including the bleed-back system on the trailer
- The breakway system being operable on the trailer
Why Proper Brake Maintenance is Essential
Faulty brakes are a leading cause of commercial vehicle accidents. Regular maintenance and a holistic approach to brake system upkeep are crucial in preventing violations and ensuring safety on the road.
